Is solaris oe 8 good for the home use.
What do you use it for. Does it run better
on a sparcstation? What computer do you run it on yourselves. What sparcstaion would you recommend to a newbie at solaris? Any and all help appreciated! Please respond>

Solaris is not typically recommended for home use like a traditional Windows machine.
It is geared more towards SA's and developers who are trying to further their knowledge of the Solaris OS or just messing around. You will also find that locating software for your Solaris box will be challenging.
In short, if you are looking to do basic computing (email, word processing, games and so on) I would say go with Windows. If however you are looking to learn Solaris and are not so concerned with convenience and compatibility I would then go with Solaris.

And Solaris runs on both Sparcs and Intel based PC's.

:-)

Look into Linux if you are looking for an anti-MS OS thats more user friendly.

Uh, UNIX is not just for programmers. In fact there is becoming a slew of programmers using MS API crap, that dont know what unix is. Also, why is there not a point of using it for home computing, its software all the same, it can do just about anything a wintel machine can, and IMO better. ( That opinion has some supporting facts about it also.0

If you want to try Solaris, go for it.. its a sweet os. Just get a book about it, and you'll be alright.

It can do anything a Windowz box can?!? Really! Let's see it use my Linsys WCP11 Wireless card. No wait, let's make this easier, let's see it play the TV on my ATI All-in-wonder Radeon. Oh wait that's all hardware, lets attack software too. Let's see it play Quake III (I thought I'd be nice and include some OLD software!)

Now, being a Unix guy myself, I have great respect for Solaris, if your computer is doing something you don't like you can change it. It's just a matter of finding the file it's stored in or compiling a new program to replace the functionality. But in Windows, oh well guess you just have to deal with IE, after all it can't be removed from the OS...

It's great for home use, office use, you name it!!!!

Don't want to deal with the command prompt: GNOME, KDE...

Need to type a letter, calculate your net worth, and do a presentation: StarOffice, GNOME Office, KOffice.

What to watch TV on your Sun Blade 150:
Raptor GFX TV

As for the rest:
Who has time to play games? I don't.
And my Blade weights to much to go wondering around with it. Wireless?? No thanks. When Sun makes a SPARC laptop then I will start worrying about wireless.
