We have a situation here with our Unix box running solaris 8. I was hoping someone might have an idea what the problem is.
Our server is setup with a fixed ip address and most of the people in our org can connect to the server via the internet but several of them cannot. They can't even ping the server, it just times out.
We did a trace route and it appears that for users who can't connect it is failing at the last step before it reaches the server. (mine follows the same route but it connects)
This is just a test machine so we have not set up a firewall or anything like that.
Everyone who is failing appears to be using the same dsl provider (pac bell), I don't know if that is significant or not.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
Helga

I suggest you should check for the routing config of the ISP/DSL provider. Normally, whenever other hosts from the internet can connect to your server, 99 percent sure that there's nothing wrong with the net config of the server.

We have a second server that is running windows NT. Our users (who cannot to connect to Solaris) have all been able connect to this box so I switched the Solaris ip to this address. After the switch, they could not ping the address.
We checked the routing and it appears that the route is virtually the same for those work vs. those who don't. The only difference is the last step to the server.

Hello. We are running a mixed mode 2k/nt4 network. Nt4 server is unable to ping router at remote site. All 2k servers are fuctioning normally. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Jandino
