I/O error when i run newfs cmd

Hi guys i am getting the following error after running the newfs command.How can solve this.i would like to format the HD with a new file system.

bash-3.00# newfs /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s1
/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s1: I/O error
