Hi ,
I have following problem. I am trying to share my internet connection(comcast cable modem) on win 2000 with sparc solaris 8 machine. I have two lan cards in win2k machine . One is conncted to cable modem and another to internal LAn to Sun machine. I can ping the two machines successfully.
i have entered win2k's IP in the /etc/defaultrouter file on Sun machine . However, I don't know what should be the nameserver entry there. Because my Internet provider doesn't give me static iP. It has setting of connect DNS server automatically.
So, my first question is what should be nameserver entry in Sun machine.
Secondly, i cannot ping to any o site. It gives me error unknown host .Also, when I try nslookup it hangs. So, looks like DNS (nameserver) is not configured properly. Please, let me know how should I solve this problem.

Thanks a lot.

There are many ways to do what u want to do.
Use NAT. from routing and remote access in win2k.
on solaris add default route to ure win2k machine,
Another way is use some proxy server with dns and dhcp built in like wingate , install wingate on win2k, but you need to configure proxy on solaris to access internet and machine to get ip from dhcp also there will be no ping to external host.
Use third party NAT software on win2k and add a default route to ure win2k machine,
in last and first case you have to edit ure /etc/resolv, to enter these
nameserver "win2kip",
because NAT by a routing and remote access and third party NAT software often include DNS server.
Wish u good luck

Hi..Thanks a lot for your response. If I choose to use your first option , wingate proxy software on win2k machine, is it free.
Secondly, if I choose to use NAT ( thats what I am trying right now),is there any third party NAT software which is free? Right now I have configured /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/defaultrouter (both with win2k ip )on Sun machine. And also setup proxy server entry in netscape on Sun machine. I should try to install third party NAT now on win2k.
Thanks agian for your response.
