it can be done, i have had it running, it is part of the solaris / gnome packages, try helix update or a search on google for 'gaim', but i suspect you will have to compile it, and there are probably dependancies on various gnome libraries.
if you have serious firewalls at your site then don't get too excited, i could not get it to connect properly for more than a few seconds with my only option, thru https proxy (this is a documented feature of the https proxy server method)

There is also a client for tcl/tk called Tik, it runs on any platform that can run tcl/tk, it runs fine on solaris. tcl and tk are easily obtained from www.sunfreeware.com tik can be found here: http://tik.sourceforge.net/
