when i type
#ifconfig eth0 not found
what could be the possible reazon..cos i see the ipaddress assigned to my network card when i type

thanks in advance

If you are on sparc plateform then interface will be hme0 or eri0.If you are on intel plateform then interface will iprb0 or elbc0(for 3com 3c905c-TXM).
it depend on interface.

Please ubderstand I don't know what you are trying to do, but If you type the following command:
ifconfig -a and you get the following:
elxl0 inet xxx.xx.xx.x netmask xxx.xx.xx.x etc.
That means that your network card is elx10. You can check this in your /etc directory, you should have a file named, hostname.elx10.
do a more on the file and see what its contents are. The contents identify that card in your /etc/hosts file.
If you are trying to change the IP address then the following command should help.
ifconfig elx10 inet xxx.xx.xx.x
the xxx.xx.xx.x is were your new ip address should go.
