Comment:

As you know, when binding the 80 port in Solaris, the root user is needed.

But I need install iPlanet 6.1 webserver in our UAT server without root access.

Do you know how to bind 80 port as non root user?

Thanks in advance!

Some time back I also faced such problem for our application deployment on BEA Web logic. After al long search what is arrived is that its certainly not possible to bind any service to well known ports without privileged user.

Also its fair from security point of view.

I will suggest you two options which I used in Scenario

Because initially we didn't have a dedicated firewall for application hosting that's why we hosted the Apache in another low end machine and used its url redirector to map service of port 80 to my application server.

You can also use the IP chain for that.

But the best way to do this is use the Port Address Translation (PAT) in a Firewall so all the request which is coming on some ip at Port 80 will be get redirected to high level port by firewall this will help you to host the application on port 80 without compromising the system security.

Sorry I am not able to mention u in my previous posting that in Web logic it gives you option that you can start the service in privileged port with root and than shift the application server control to the Application user or other user.

I am not aware about the iPlanet weather iPlanet has this feature or not. But my logic says that it should support this feature.
