Use admintool to create the device entry. I used this site to help guide me through setting up PPP and modem:

I would HIGHLY recommend you download Solaris 8 4/01 media from SUN. It's free!
* It has apache 1.3.9 !
* Gnome and KDE
* AND MOST importantly for YOU pppd 2.3.10.1
