Do you have telnet and ftp daemons installed?
Is your machine using /etc/inetd.conf or /etc/xinetd.d ? If it /etc/inetd.conf look for a line like

telnet stream tcp6 nowait root /usr/sbin/in.telnetd in.telnetd

Hello Sri

Are you requested for login info when you telnet or ftp?
If yes what usename are you logging in with or more specifcally are you using root to login?

Thanks

jono

telnet and ftp are enabled by default.
if you wanna go as root . you need to
commment out this line to enable telnet for root
CONSOLE=/dev/console in /etc/default/login .

#CONSOLE=/dev/console

FTP just comment out root in /etc/ftpusers

However none of these are advised. you want
to be a regular user and su - as needed.
