To get vendor information. For most items you will have to open the case and retrieve the sun part number. You can track the sun part number through http://sunsolve.sun.com. For NICs you may be able to use vendor code tracking. If local-mac-address? is set to true at the boot prom (ok), then an ifconfig -a will show you the mac address. The first 3 colon delimited slots will be the hardware vedor code. You can then do a search on the net for "ethernet vendor codes". You should be able to match the card to a vendor at that point. Keep in mind that the vendor codes can be and often are leased out to 3rd party hardware manufacturers.
