Hello,
Recently I installed Solaris 10 on this old workstation I had laying around. Finally got X up and running but now im getting an error message when I try to start Gnome (Java Desktop as they call it). CDE is working fine as is everything else. I had Gnome running fine before the weekend and now I get these errors after a restart.
The errors I get are:
***********
** Error **
***********
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly
The settings Daemon restarted too many times.
GNOME will still try to restart the settings Daemon next time you log in.
*********

*********Nautilus can't be used now,

Nautilus can't be used right now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when attempting to register the file manager view server.
*********
* Error *
*********There was a problem registering the panel with the bonobo-activation server.
The error code is: 3
The panel will now exit.
Does anyone have ideas on what I could try to resolve this as it seems a little odd and the error messages are a little cryptic to me.Thanks in advance for any help offered
Mike

Quick update:
I just found out the problem is isolated to the root account so not too much of an issue as i can still work around it and if i need root just su into it.
Would still like to know what is causing it though.
Thanks

I know that when I worked at IBM we would get computers that would run MS OS's all day long. When we tried to load OS/2 they would fail. Even new releases or patches of MS products would fail on some run's or even complete lines.
While I can't say what is your issue exactly I can say that unless the system is a system that is known to work (includes to the revision number) then you can get this.
One site suggested that you should burn the CD's at the slowest speed or order the factory pressed disks to be sure your burn is correct. I know my ordered disks have not failed an install.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Thanks for the help, I just fixed it by re running a few configuration files... To be honest no idea how I fixed it. But I managed to launch Gnome inside CDE which now lets me log in to Gnome on it's own.
Odd little computer!

That is a lot better than my answer. :)
