Getting Solaris x86 onto the internet

Please bear with me, I'm new to this kind of thing.

I've recently installed Solaris 8 onto my AMD K2 500 machine with Windows 2000 dual boot. I've already had problems getting my Network Card (D-Link) working, and have swapped it for an AMD that seems to get one step further during installation, so I'm pretty sure the system knows of the card (it works fine in Windows).

I want to get solaris onto the internet, but when I try and open a page in netscape it tells me it can't find it.

I cannot ping anything external either. I have an NTL Broadband 512K link, and there are 2 hubs between my machine and the cable box (is that the problem?)

There must be something setup wise that I need to do, but I haven't the foggiest idea what it is.

Could somebody explain to me (in Laymans terms as much as possible) what they think I need to do?

Thanks

Hi

If you card is working and you are sure about it, and internal net ping is showing you all packets going well, so another steps should be are of the following:

If you have a default gateway put his ip in file you should create it manualy with vi editor, for example

touch /etc/defaultrouter
vi /etc/defaultrouter
Write there an ip of router.

Next one, create another file
touch /etc/resolv.conf

Put there string
nameserver ip.addr.of.nserv

So it is enough for default Solaris 8 installation if you didn't choose NIS+ as your name system

Good luck

Hello

The easiest way in this situation is change you Realtek card to any normal Intel or 3Com card 10/100 - it doesn't cost much.

:) and good luck

Thanks, I sorted it out.... I lied and set it up using DNS and claimed I was in my Universities Domain... (I'm not) all it wanted was a name server, but I was a bit concerned as to what I should use.

Cheers!!
