Where did you try to format a partition?
Under Solaris in the VM?

During creation of the new VM in VMware, what type of harddisk have you chosen, hopefully not physical harddrive.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

Have you already checked for available partitions with
fdisk -l

Then you can use mount to check, which of the available partitions are mounted by using
mount

If you want to format an already mounted partition, you need to unmount it first by using
umount /mountpoint_of_partition

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

Have you crosschecked, whether there is something mounted, e.g. a directory of that partition via mount after you've unmounted the primary mountpoint of that disk.

Or could you post which partition of which disk should be formated and post the output of fdisk -l and mount.
This would make it easier for me to figure out, what't going on at your machine.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!
