Hi All, a colleague of mine deleted a test box a couple of days ago and now when we boot the box up to reload the OS it comes up to the boot prompt where we type boot cdrom but because the OS is gone it asks for a Firware password which nobody knows is there a way around this without having to replace the eeprom chip

TIA
Grant

Any way you boot the server you will need the firmware password, if this is indeed lost then you will have to contact SUN to order a new chip for your server. Once you set the chip and install can you issue the command:

setenv security-mode=none

This will ensure that there is no password on the EEPROM, with the new chip there shouldn't be a password anyhow. But a new chip is needed. I had the same problem on one of my training servers that a student set a password and forgot it. Hopefully it's a newer server, the lead time for me was 3 months. Good luck.

1) At the OK Prompt type banner, and jot down Ethernet address and hostid#

Ethernet address will be 8 0 20 nn nn nn

Hostid will be 80nnnnnn

In step 8, just enter the nnnnnn part not the 80 part

2) Open the hood

3) Remove the NVRAM

4) Plug the NVRAM in backwards

5) Apply power for 2 seconds

#This will erases the contents

6) Reinstall the nvram properly

7) Turn on power again

8) Enter in new NVRAM parameters:

ok 0 0 mkp

ok 8 0 20 nn nn nn hostid mkpl

ctl-d

ctl-r

ok banner

9) This should have reset the contents without the password.

If it still complains, try step 4-8 again……
