extracting samba file

A newbie to the forum. I wish to install samba on solaris7 on intell x86.from other sources I am advised to use the following to uncompress the file: gzip samba[x]*tar.gz | tar -xvf - but when I do the above, I get the error message to the effect: ksh: zip not found ..... etc. I use find utitlity to local zip command but could not find. could someone help how to extract the zip file so I can install samba.
