I need to install V10 on a new ide hard drive but I get "bad magic number". How do I create that on the hard drive?

A bad magic number error (most likely) indicates the OS is having trouble accessing the new disk's VTOC (Volumne Table of Contents).
If you know the alternate superblocks, then you can fsck the partition. If you don’t know the alternate superblocks and created the partition using newfs command, then you can use the newfs -N option to print out the superblocks without actually recreating the file system.
