console login problem

I have this Ultra 1 desktop with an ASCII terminal attached. At the login prompt, when either 'root' or user login or even a single letter entry or wrong user ID, the terminal immediately come backs with the message, 'cannot chdir to , errno=2'.
Telnet or remotely logging in with root or my user ID works just fine.
