Changing paths

I try to add a path for a new program, it all seems to work pretty good i do it with the next sentence PATH=/usr/newprogram:/opt/newprogram:${PATH} export PATH but when i try to acces to the commands it just says that not found. tell me if there is an other way to addi it. thanks.

you may add it manually into the /etc/profile and then do . /etc/profile or source /etc/profile
