guys, i need help over here , i'm going nuts, here is the problem , i configured my box to use DHCP , now when i type hostname i get unknown , i know some of you guys might say oh you need to edit the init.d/network and change the word unknow to the hostname you want , agreed , but what i guess i really need to know is why the sun box at work , have same version as solaris 8 and i can type hostanme (new hostname) and change it to anything i want but the init.d/network still says unknow , but when i do that in my machine and reboot by usiong init 6 it goes back to unknown .
what i'm trying to say here is , when i type hostname (new hostname) and i reboot it goes back to unknow ? WHY .Thanks in advance

Depends a lot on your dhcp server. The one I use here binds the hostname and ip address to a mac address. The box comes up knowing everything.

I had the same problem because my DHCP server (and router and etc.) does not assign names, just IP and DNS info...like yours... I got around kind of as you said...in init.d/network modified the command at the "/sbin/uname -S unknown" with the name I wanted...

I got a similar problem which happen in one of our client.By using Solaris 8 when I try to do rcp one file to my PC , the server do not know the destination and give error unknown host :ffff:10.1.10.120 where by right my PC IP address is 10.1.10.120 only(DHCP).
IS anybody know how to solve this?.
