Subject: can't open boot device |
Comment: I have a used sun ultra 5 workstation that I can't get to boot to solaris. I believe that the configuration is screwed up. I have no passwords so I am trying to reinstall Solaris 8 so that I can get into the system. When I insert the solaris 1 disk and type ok boot cdrom or ok boot cdrom -s It says bad magic number in disk label can't open disk label package Evaluating: boot cdrom can't open boot device Any thoughts on how to get it to boot from cdrom? Thanks Guys

Reply: (edit)Hello.... It could be that the cdrom alias stored at theboot prom level is different from the actual cdrom device name. Compare the cdrom alias using command "devalias" with the physical cdrom device name that you can get by doing a probe-scsi. If they are different then you'll have to replace the alias "cdrom" with the full physical device name Hope this helps

Reply: (edit)Lyndon, I don't have any experience on workstations. Could you simplify your answer and maybe give me an example? Thanks for the reply!

Reply: (edit)Hi Ted, When you type 'boot cdrom'at the ok promt the word cdrom is an alias for the physical name of the cdrom device. If you type in 'devalias' at the ok promt you'll get a list of aliasname/realname for example for an ultra5 the output should be similar to below : cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f This alias is can be userdefined and sometime incorrectly specified.
Run the command 'probe-ide' and see what device the cdrom is listed as. Ensure that this number matches the 'cdrom@2' portion of the cdrom alias above. If your Ultra5 system has the default config then the cdrom alias should bevery similar to the one above.

Reply: (edit) Hi Ted, I seem to be having the same problem with my U10. Though the device name and the alias for my cdrom match, even then i get the error "can't open boot device'.
Can you tell me , how you solved this problem? Thanks a million

Reply: (edit)I have the same problem. I kept notes on the procedure to remedy the situation, gut they are on a dead computer. So, I am trying to relearn. I used to assign the device using the alphanumeric string, but I don't remember the sequence. I was told that possibly the CDROM is installed in the wrong place on the ide chain. Anyone know where is should be by default? It has an alias: cdrom@2,3:f Probe-ide doesn't show a CDROM on the chain? Only the two 30 GB drives. Why? Thanks

Reply: (edit) Lyndon, I also have the same problem with Ted. On doing probe-ide, I have the following
Device 0 (Primary Master) ATA MODEL: ST320413A Device 2 (Secondary Master) REMOVABLE ATAPI MODEL: CREATIVE CD5233E I want to ask Is the device model synonymous with name. When I tried boot CREATIVE CD5233E , it prompts me for filename[CREATIVE} Thanks.
