Can't get ess1869 to work in sol9

While kdmconfig displays the ess 1869 sound board, i just can't get it to come up in Solaris. A google search pointed me to this article, http://access1.sun.com/certify/reports/7/Compaq/Compaq-Deskpro-EN-6400-PII-400.html, which matches my computer configuration, but it cryptically commands me to "add ESS1869 to master to get it working." What does this mean, and how is it done?
