Recently I installed Solaris 8 on a X86 machine and connected it to a D-Link DSL router behind the ADSL modem. I created the following files:

/etc/hosts ==>192.168.0.3 test loghost
/etc/defaultrouter ==>192.168.0.1
/etc/resolv.conf ==>domain gte.net
nameserver 4.2.2.1
nameserver 4.2.2.2

After that, I can ping the default router (192.168.0.1) or any one outside my private network (such as yahoo, 216.115.102.76). But when I use traceroute, it seems not to be working. The returned message is:
1 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 2.852ms 1.411ms 1.330 ms
2 * * *
3 * * *
4 * * *

-----
OF course, I can't surf any web sites thru Netscape either. Can any enlighten me on this, I will really appreciate.

Thanks,

enok

If you're going via a router then there's a chance that traceroute won't work with UDP. You have to use

traceroute -I [destination]

Not surfing through netscape will probably be due to your settings... what do you have set up for proxy and so on? IIRC then you don't need to put anything in at all.

Mike,
Thanks so much for the info.
"traceroute -I" does trace nicely.

I did not do anything on proxy, not quite sure if cable.Dsl router has any proxy built in. But I did disable DHCP Server function inside the router.

This is what I configure inside the Netscape..
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies -> select "Direct connect to the internet"
BUt it still can surf.

If I do this way...
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies -> select "Manual proxy configuration"
->then set FTP Proxy: 192.168.0.1 Port: 80
HTTP Proxy: 192.168.0.1 Port: 80
It still can't surf.

Any further suggestion will be appreciated.

this might not be relevant but on sparc, netscape _requires_ /usr/sbin/nscd be running

hey,

i am having the same problem. its a DNS related issue. i'm running a sun ss5 w/solaris 8 + patches. if during the OS install i configure the DNS server the install works fine, as does web browsing. but if during the OS install i choose not to configure the DNS i cannot browse the web, however i can still ping, traceroute, etc.

i am going thru a LinkSys router running as a DHCP server, it is assigning an IP to the ss5 just fine....'

my question is...

How do i configure the dns setting that this box should use after an OS install? please remember this box is not asting as a DNS server, but instead i need to point to my ISP's DNS servers.

thanks
