I bought a SUN Ultra 10 from a company that went bankrupt. When I turn the machine on, it is asking for a user name and password. It is running solaris5.6 . I have downloaded solaris 8 and able to boot from cdrom in single user mode. I have tried following instruction suggested by others on this site. Nothing works. Is there any other solution. Please let me know.

"Nothing works" isn't a very useful or
descriptive way of explaining what you've
tried and how it didn't work. Please be a
little more verbose as to what you've tried.

Mate, if you're booting into single user mode you should be able to follow instructions others have written for removing root password so you can gain entry.

once you're at the prompt you need to make sure you mount the root partition to /a otherwise you'll be trying to write to a file on the cdrom which won't work.

You're probably making a simple mistake somewhere which is preventing you from solving this problem.

Why don't you simply install Solaris 8 from the CD.. you probably don't whant to use the install that is already on the server anyway.. (who knows what trojans could be lurking in there)

when the box is booting up hit the Stop+A buttons
at the boot ptom prompt type
ok> boot cdrom

If this is a Bootable Solaris image you will then be able to run through a new install..

Hi Netdoctor,
I reinstalled Solaris 8 (I did a initial Install, where the hard drive was reformatted) and when the computer boots up, it is not accepting my password. I gave the same name for user name and password so as to be sure I would not mistype any words. I have reinstalled twice and I have the same problem. I think it is still looking for a username and password from a network (it was on a network previously). Also while installing I made sure to to select No Network. Will appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks
J.R.

Try this
1: Stop A & go to the OK prompt
Thats hold the Stop key down (upper left) and then press the A key. The OK prompt should appear.
2: type set-defaults
3: Insert software 1 CD and type boot cdrom
4: Follow the instructions and install Solaris.

Hi if u dont wont anything thats on the hard drive, Like the programes the compaine used, then Just obtane a os cd-rom, use a windows 98 or higher startup disc and boot with cd-rom surport, Delete all parthsions and format the hard drive, when using cd-rom surport with 98 or higher start up disc will give u ram drive cd-rom drivers so u can use ur cd-rom in a simple Disc os, put in the os cd-rom and run the setup.exe on the cd-rom. the u have the hole HD to do what u wont with, plus this will get rid of all the files that would of been left with when just uninstalling the software u didn't wont.
