Comment:

I have an ULTRA Sparc which has Solaris 2.6 installed, and has been running quite happily. However, I have rebooted the machine and all I now get is:

Bad Magic Number in Disk Label
Can't open disk label package
Boot device: net File and args:
Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet

I can't even get to a prompt.
Is the disk volume label corrupt?
How do I recover from this without getting to a prompt?

Rob.

hit STOP-A and boot from CD
STOP-A
OK> boot cdrom -s
# fsck
Don't know if this will fix it or not but it's a start. Did anything change in the server (hardware?)
I once saw this problem when the disk wasn't seated properly

that should read
# fsck /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 (or whatever your boot disk is)
This board doesnt like the use of greater than and less than signs

Thanks for the reply.

STOP A worked in getting me to the boot prompt.
I them booted from CD, using your suggested course of action.

I'm having a similar problem, but with a CD that
was generated with a CD-Recorder. I'm trying to
boot with the newly created CD, but get the
message "Bad Magic Number...".Obviously, the
above solution will not work on a non writable CD.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

I had a problem alike:

I have a Ultra 10 with a recently changed CDROM drive (the Goldstar it came with went dead). The new one is an ASUS 50x (atapi).

The change was ok and I could install Solaris 2.6 in a SCSI disk.

The U10 already had a second HD (Maxtor 30 GB, only 8 used in Solaris 2.6), so I tried to change this one for a Fujitsu (8 GB).

The problem is that after I changed the disks I couldn't boot from the CDROM again. The message is:

Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package

Any hint?

Ivan.

I'm having a similiar problem running Solaris 2.6 on a Sparc 10. I'm trying to add a second disk, but when I install the disk and try to boot I get the Bad Magic Number in Disk Label error. It will not even let me boot the system with this disk in. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Jay

Try booting into single-user mode with the CD-ROM as described above. Then type

format

this should as you to select a disk. Do that and then give the disk a volume label with the

volume

command. That did the trick for me.. If not try fooling around with other things in the format menu.

Good luck.
