Comment:

I have a sparc 20 with Solaris 2.4. I like to backup everything on this machine to somewhere in case its hard drive crashes. But I don't have any tape device for it. I only have an external hard drive which was connected to another machine. How do I backup the whole system on the sparc 20 to the hard drive?

ufsdump works well. The man pages will tell you more but the basic syntax is

usfdump -0uf destination filesystem

where destination can be a file or a raw tape device and filesystem is either a mount point or the device name like /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0
