Hi sunsolnav

I really appreciate your detailed message.

1. We do not have any setup for backup as on now.

2. We remotely logon to our servers using PuTTy software (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/).

3. PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator. We log on to our servers using laptops (windows).

4. We prefer online backup with some firms because there will be no one to handle the backup devices, changing the tapes etc at our data warehouse.

5. Also you have mentioned that Veritas and others are expensive. We prefer inexpensive methods to begin with.

6. Pl suggest me some online backup firms so that we can have a contract for the sake of evaluation and take the final decision.

Also if you can, pl ...

I want to patch my Sun Fire v60 servers. I can remotely log onto my servers as root using PuTTY software

Pl let me know step by step how to patch the servers. Upon visiting sunsolve.com, I feel it would be better to patch my servers regularly.

Thanks for your time.

Hello Shra ,

I under that you are doing a remote adminstration . To my knowledge there is no company who handles only backups .
And taking backup over the network is more expensive .
If you are very much worried about the system resources .You can follow the basic norms to face any disaster as i said in my previous update .
And as per the datacentre ( data warehouse ) regulations , there should be someone maintaining .If you have someone over there , you can take their help for the below .
1) To connect the drive.
2) To do tape inserting and removal activites .
3) And to follow your guidelines .

Once if you are ok with the above , you can schedule the backups and fire them using cronjobs .

Backup units ( tape drive and tape media ) depends on the total disk space on the server .

Can you give me more information about patching up of servers ? I didnt get what you mean .

Hi sunsolnav

Thank you for your ideas.

There are total 4 Sun Fire V60 servers.

Sun1:apache,ntpd & DNS
sun2:apache,ntpd & DNS
sun3:Postgres (Freeware database)& radius (application)
sun4:Just installed

Also we have 2 Dell machines loaded with Redhat 9.0.

We do not have any local storage.

Downtime of host is not allowed and hence ufsdump and ufsrestore cannot be used.We are just looking for live backup. Budget matters I am not sure. But pl mail me the details so that I can talk to the concerned.

Can you mail me some details about the procurement of hardware and commercial software which enables us live backup with out bringing the servers down.

Any companies at Toronto (Canada) please.

Thanks in advance

No need to patch anything in order to log as root onto your server. Just use the "su" command to access privileged account. This behavior may be modified, but not recommend, somewhere in the /etc config files.

Most colocation service come with backup services, power-ups services, fire prevention. Why do you need your own backup? How much data do you have? It may be tarz and transfered over the network to one of your local host.

In 2004, forget tapes-drives and veritas!!! Use the existing networking tools included in solaris.

Danny
