Hi all, sorry about the lameness of this post but I am not sure how to install a network printer on a Solaris 8 box. Basicallly I want to be able to print from the box to a networked HP Laserjet 4050n. All the documentation that I have read says not to use the admintool but to just install the drivers for the printer. However I'm unable to obtain said drivers. Thanks for any help.

Try to find out if the printer supports UNIX lpr-printing or BSD-printing. If it does then you just enter a hostname (of your choice) and the printers ip-address in /etc/hosts. Then setup the printer as "connection to remote printer" with either Admintool or commandline lp-commands (more versatile) in Solaris. Note that Solaris only handles ASCII (plain text) and PostScript when it comes to printers. For more information about configuring printers in Solaris, please refer to Sysadmin guide vol.2 at docs.sun.com. http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/805-7229
Another simple but not so nice solution (at least with PCL-printers) is to setup a Win2k-server box with "Printing services for UNIX" installed. Install the printer-drivers the usual way in Win2k, and then share the printer. On the Solaris box, enter a hostname (of choice) and the win2k-box ip-address in /etc/hosts and then setup the printer as a connection to remote printer using the choosen hostname in admintool.
