Accessing WinNT files from Solaris

Hi,
I have a Java web application running on Oracle 9i AS (OC4J) on a Solaris 8 machine. This application needs to access some images located on a Windows NT machine. In my program, I access images using the following path: loc = "\\\\host-name\\photos\\image.jpg"
This works fine when the application runs on a Windows machine, but fails when it runs on Solaris, as it is unable to recognize the path.
Can somebody tell me a way to do this?
Can it be done without using software like Samba/ Sharity or using FTP?
