Hi all!

I'm new to Solaris and I have a few problems now. I need to install gcc to be able to compile sw. I need ssh and mysql rather urgent. I don't know what the abbrevations stand for which are on the Solaris install CD. I think on the first one is mainly hardwarestuff.
I downloaded the file gcc-3.3.2-sol8-sparc-local and installed it with pkgadd -d. Now gcc is under /usr/local/bin/gcc. I tried to export the path to it; to no avail.
Furthermore I do not have any manpages anymore! I get this after e.g. man ls:
Reformatting page. Please Wait...nroff: cannot create temp file.
done

I googled and found a lot of hints but nothing helped. I have enough space, the rights are ok. I created a tmp in my home. Nothing.
Before I had this problem I moved the entire /usr to /opt/usr and made a link to it because I nedded space in / in order to install gcc. What now?
I managed to install ssh. I downloaded the file and installed it again with pkgadd -d.
When I try to execute it I get:
# /usr/local/bin/ssh
ld.so.1: /opt/usr/local/bin/ssh: fatal: libcrypto.so.0.9.7: open failed: No such file or directory
Killed

Why? Where do I get that libcrypto?
The next two important things are mysql and mc. Does domebody can give me some hints?

Next problem are the tape backups. Somebody made backups with Legato. I think this is not installed. I don't now how to install it but I have the CDs. Could somebody help me?
I can see that there is simething:
# mt -f /dev/rmt/0n status
Vendor 'TANDBERG' Product 'DLT7000 ' tape drive:
sense key(0x0)= No Additional Sense residual= 0 retries= 0
file no= 1 block no= 0

ufsrestor gives me:
# ufsrestore -i -f /dev/rmt/0n
Mount volume 2
then enter volume name (default: /dev/rmt/0)
Mount volume 3
then enter volume name (default: /dev/rmt/0)
Mount volume 4
then enter volume name (default: /dev/rmt/0)
Mount volume 5
then enter volume name (default: /dev/rmt/0)
Mount volume 6
then enter volume name (default: /dev/rmt/0)

and so on. Or this:
# ufsrestore -i
Media read error: Not enough space

Then I did this:
# ufsrestore ifb /dev/rmt/0n 512
Volume is not in dump format

All right. It is probably in Legato format, isn't it?

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,
h.

It sounds like you will have unending problems due to your initial drive partitioning. Before you are neck deep in this, I suggest you reinstall giving more space to the directories you see needing it. Try / at 500 MB with separate partitions for /opt, /usr, /var.

www.sunfreeware.com is a good source for pkgadd files.

The output from ufsdump tells you only that it is not in ufsdump format. It could also be tar or cpio but in your case if you shop is using legato, that would be a good guess.

Yes, of course you are right. But first of all I have to make
backups and see how mysql works. Then I can decide
whether I reinstall or not.

Yes, I know. I downloaded gcc and ssh there.

I did not consider that it could be just dump without ufs.
Unfortunately I don´t have dump/restore. I´ll better try to
put that legato stuff on the machine.
Thanks for your answer!
Greetings,

h.

Solaris referes to the utilities as ufsdump and ufsrestore. Linux calls the same utilities dump and restore. ufsdump and ufsrestore should be system utilities. Also, tar and cpio should be on your box.
