Zonebac Removal - Redbox.msi

Original Message
Name: JEMitchell
Date: March 2, 2008 at 20:26:45 Pacific
Subject: Zonebac Removal - Redbox.msi
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: AMD 64 Athlon 512 MB
Model/Manufacturer: HP Pavilion zv6000
Comment:
This started popping up (when the computer first starts) on Feb 10th when Norton said it had stopped a virus and needed to restart the computer to delete the file.

When I start the computer (every time) HP Product Assistant pops-up and stops the progress bar and says it cannot find the file. I click on 'Browse' and It first looks in “My Documents” for the “Redbox.msi” file. I hit cancel and it pops-up 'Error 1706' Then does the same thing again. Then HP Product Assistant closes and re-opens and looks in the folder “System32” and DRVSTORE folder is blue for the same “Redbox.msi” and does the same thing (So it looks a total of 4 times, twice in each folder)

I looked in my Norton History, and have 3 High priority alerts, all on February 10th.
The worst of which appears to be “Trojan.Zonebac detected by Auto-Protect” 35 minutes earlier “jusched was blocked from accessing your network resources” 1 second earlier “Google Toolba… was blocked from accessing your network resources”

Any help to get rid of this is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

Download the "HijackThis" Installer from this link:
Hijack This

1. Save " HJTInstall.exe" to your desktop.
2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
5.Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
7. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
8. Paste the log in your next reply.
9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please download FindAWF from the following link:
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/FindAWF.exe

Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it. It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue". You will be presented with a Menu.
1. Press 1 then Enter to scan for bak folders
2. Press 2 then Enter to restore files from bak folders
3. Press 3 then Enter to remove bak folders
4. Press 4 then Enter to reset domain zones
5. Press E then Enter to EXIT
Press 1 then press Enter. Copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

The HP Product Assistant does not pop-up anymore when I turn the computer on. Is my computer fixed?

A friend suggested I delete Adobe and Java and download new versions from their websites. Do you think I should do that?

Thanks your continued help!

Norton Internet Security popped-up when I opened Internet Explorer after running all 3 scans saying “Phishing Settings: For best results, we recommend that you change your default phishing filter to Norton Internet Security. Do you want to make this change now?” I just closed the screen, do you recommend I hit click Yes or No next time? Thanks! I really appreciate your help!

Yes you can allow norton's to be the dedault for the phishing filter.

Your logs are clean but we need to do some cleanup and double check your system

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

Download CCleaner from the following link:

http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

After you download it to your desktop and begin installing it only allow the "install icon on desktop" to install . Then run it, use only as suggested, it's powerful use only the prechecked items.

Run an online scan with Kaspersky from the following link:
Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE YO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
Once the files are downloaded click on Next
Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Base
Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Go to start> run> type in combofix /u (there must be a space after combofix) then press ok. That will uninstall combofix.

Delete the FindAWF icon from your desktop and do a search for "FindAWF and delete all instances of it.

Go to start> control panel>add/remove programs and uninstall

Hijack This
Kaspersky
These older versions of java:
jre1.5.0_02
jre1.5.0_10
jre1.5.0_06
jre1.5.0_11
jre1.5.0_09
jre1.6.0_01
jre1.6.0_02

Your java is out of date and can be exploited.
Download the latest version of java from this link Java
Click on the JDK 6 Update 5 download button.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the "coffee cup" icon next to it.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
Then from your desktop double-click on jdk-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe
to install the newest version.

You should consider adding "Spywareblaster" to your arsenol of antispyware tools, you can download it from this link Spywareblaster

Just download it,install it, and update it. Its free and runs in the background, so you don't actually run it, and re-writes malicious script before it can install on your computer. Look for updates weekly as there is no auto-update on the free version.

How is your computer operating?

When I go to to start> run> type in "combofix /u" this error message popped-up:

“Windows cannot find ‘combofix’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.”

I tried capitalizing the words, but always the same message. Is there any other way to delete ComboFix.exe? I can see the icon on the desktop.

Also “ccsetup205…” and “CCleaner” are on the desktop, can I remove them? (I saw “CCleaner” in the list of programs in Add/Remove)

The computer seams to be running well to me!

Thanks for helping me!

Just right click on the combofix icon and delete.

Yes you can delete ccleaner, you will need to go to add/remove programs to uninstall it then just delete the installer on your desktop.

Glad we could help.

My roommate has a very similar problem on his computer. Can I have him post the “Hijack This” and “Find AWF” logs from his computer? Should I start a new page with the same title?

Is there a charity you believe in, that I can donate to in your name? I am thankful for your help and don’t know of a better way to express my appreciation.

Thanks, but no contributions are accepted by Computing.net at this time.
