I down loaded Zone Alarm but couldn't install it because it says I am missing a file. VSNETUTILS.dll. I have no idea of what this is or what to do about it. Thanks

I was gonna say that, but didn't want to be the first.

I would try uninstalling/reinstalling it ckdiz, but make sure you follow their removal instructions carefully at the ZA site.

Just another reason not to go with ZA,IMHO.
Sygate is virtually trouble-free,unlike ZA.

hi ckdiz,
I also was going to say that but you beat me to it, the kid.
Assuming you downloaded it, you may have a corrupt download, or your
anti virus software may be interferring with your install. Try installing
without your anti virus running, and if that fails, try downloading it again.
but make sure you follow their removal instructions carefully at the ZA site.
and yes, just another reason why you should try Kerio.
all the best,
murve

I wasn't going to reply, but.............

I was running Kerio up until last night. I ran GRC's "Shield's Up" program which tests firewalls and ports. I ran it against Kerio and it found a few holes that could be used to hack into my PC. So I went back to ZA last night.

Try uninstalling, following ZA's instructions to the letter and then re-install.

And if you use Zone Alarm you might as well as turn off you System Restore, since it stops restore points.Just to let people know I blocked email from Zone Alarm because I was getting all kinds of offers to buy Zone Alarm Pro and other programs, because I was a registered user of Zone Alarm, since the system restore problem plus others I uninstalled it and emailed them at least 5 times for a fix or answer, they did not or would not reply, so I will not deal with Zone Alarm Again, besides Sygate has back trace for free and no problems running Sygate, and if you set it correct it will pass Stealth tests at PCFlank or any other, yet you can still surf the web..Just my 5 cents.....

The Kid's advice is well taken.
You probably got a corrupt version of the download, quite possibly from having an anti virus program running during install/download.
Do not try and download the dll and apply it as it will bind itself to another and cause more problems.
The only solution is to do a complete and carefull uninstall of ZA per the instructions
here: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/support/znalmInstall98FAQ.jsp
Pause, reflect, and if you wish try again.
Or seek an alternative.
The Kid turned me in to this site which gives a really good overview of Sygate setup and features.

Zone Alarm Pro 3.1 apparently does not block system restore because I have the normal system restore points listed. I have never had to use one but I assume they work.

Sue, maybe when you say Zone Alarm bocks system restore, you should clarify what version you are referring to otherwise it could be misleading.

I like ZAP, so I don't want it to get a bad rap that isn't always true :) Nothing personal.

I am talking about the free version 3.0 personally, but I have also read on this forum that the pro also stops the restore point but do not know if it is true I can only speek honestly about my experience and that was with the free version new one 3.0 and I don't think you will know until you have use the restore feature, what happen to me was I lost my internet connection (another problem with zone Alarm-free one) and instead of messing with it I did a system restore and it was not available except for two weeks before which I had done a lot in between that time, I am saying that if you compare the free Sygate to Free zone alarm it is Sygate all the way, it comes real close to the purchased zone alarm pro....But most of all, I think that it's awful that they would not answer the problem's to begin with, yet they keep sending me junk mail to sell something, thats why I blocked them, If you have the Pro you might be OK, you might email them and see, maybe because you bought it they might answer you.

Am not sure why all the problems with Zone Alarm, but I will say that Zone Alarm PRO is the better choice than the FREE version. But then, I know many people where I've put the FREE version on the box, and it's been fine.

One possible oversight for some users, may be NOT DISABLING their ANTIVIRUS.
Zone Alarm is picky about that.
A bad downlaod can be easily corrected,
by proper UNINSTALL and then REINSTALL correctly.

As I said, I believe Zone Alarm PRO to be a very good product and it is very safe and mostly easy to setup and run.

For $39, the PRO, can't be beat.

When I first got this new computer, I downloaded Sygate free version and used it for a week or so. For some reason, which I honestly cannot remember now, I decided I would rather go back to Zone Alarm. I had used the free version on the old computer without any problem and I don't think it interfered with system restore, but I am not sure. I have only ever used the system restore feature about 2 times that I can remember in 3 years, and when I did it worked fine.

I decided to try the free trial of ZAP and liked so much I purchased it. That's my 25 cents worth.

One more thing - and this is really a more general comment - Maybe I am lucky but I have had very few problems with either computer and I wonder if it is because I don't really tweak anything. (and I run AV and firewall and use Spybot often - so I have a "clean machine". I don't go to weird sites, crack sites, warwez sites or porn sites or use p2p and I think that helps eliminate/prevent problems also.

My computer is configured pretty much as it came out of the box from Dell. I have a lot of different software installed but no system tweaks.

My observation is by reading this forum for about 2 1/2 years now is that people who tweak their systems have a lot more problems.

Does anyone want to comment on that? (I could be entirely wrong:)

I can assure you that by "common sense
surfing", you a greatly lessening your chances of acquiring all sorts of bad infections, Windows problems and mysterious PC quirks.

Tweaking, in itself is not all that risky, but one has to be aware of the limitations, such as insane overclocking and not having the proper power supply available.

Windows tweaks are well known and relatively safe, but proceed with caution and only adjust a few at a time and then observe.

Mainly, I believe, if that one does NOT file sharing and utilize P2P networking, then that in itself puts you AHEAD of the pack in computer safety.
Be partially satisfied that you've taken baby steps to protecting and securing your PC.
