Comment: I have had recent problems in which ZA would most times start correctly when booting, but about one out of 4 times it could not initialize True Vector. I also noticed that the splash screen no longer appears since I upgraded to see if that would fix it. Finally I TOTALLY ripped out Zone Alarm down to the last little registry entry, just like the Zone Labs instructions say, then reinstalled Zone Alarm. Then it happened again. 1) Can ANYONE give me any further information on the True Vector initialization problem? 2) Has the splash screen been removed, or is that another symptom? HELP!! There MUST be something I can do! I have wasted DAYS on this problem!

Reply: (edit)Uninstall Zone Alarm and get Sygate, Kerio or Agnitum's Outpost firewall. I got tired of having it take forever to load and a few other things, so I took the easy way out. If you want the pro version of Sygate, they will take 50% off, since you had Zone Alarm Pro. Agnitum has the same offer, which also can include their Tauscan Trojan program along with Outpost as a package. All the best!

Reply: (edit)No, no, no!! Don't use sygate!! Sygate has been found to be unreliable. Zone Alarm gets great reviews and works great! :) Try uninstalling zone alarm and then re-installing it...see if that helps. :) I've been receiving newsletters from "Fred Langa". He has some pretty interesting and helpful information that can be emailed to you every week. Go to: http://www.langa.com/

Reply: (edit)hi roger, capt, karen i like the capt, have given up on zone alarm. i'm into kerio, and i've seen the difference. Z.A is bloatware, has a large footprint, long boot up and takes forever for true vector to load. disabling is a job in itself at least 10 or more steps plus registry work and if you don't know anything about the registry it can be pure hell - the key is to disable true vector service at the begining. for my money or not i would recommend tiny, kerio, outpost sygate, and even the free z.a. there is a life after Z.A pro. for more information on firewalls see www.thepublicworks.com they have a firewall section with all kinds of links. cheers, murve

Reply: (edit)I don't know where people got the idea that it is ZA Pro I'm battling with - it's not, I have just plain old Zone Alarm. And I did uninstall completely, down to every last registry entry and reload - no change There must be some simple, magic answer out there... it's too difficult a problem to have a complex answer...

Reply: (edit)hi roger, sorry about your perdicament. when you uninstalled z.a. and re-installed z.a. did you answer the question "use old settings"---yes, if you did zone alarm will re-install the former settings as they were before the uninstall. that may be the problem as zone alarm will search the registry for any z.a settings still remaining such as in the root directory, or in the internet logs. hoping this will help. cheers, murve

Reply: (edit) Sygate unreliable,What space ship did she just get off of. Man,if there is any firewall that is unreliable it would be ZoneAlarm. I have tried EVERY single firewall out,and put them through all kinds of tests and ZoneAlarm would come in 5th on my list. I have to agree with Murve ,Kerio and Tiny and Sygate are the top three.

Reply: (edit)I must agree,Sygate is way better than ANY ZoneAlarm. But I must say this it is not the best.I would have to say that Kerio is far one of the best firewalls that I have ever used,And I have used just about all of them.

Reply: (edit)IM not gonna get into a discussion on what firewall is best......its like asking Whats better, a cadillac or a lexus! Its all about preference. Ive never had a porblem at all with zone alarm. It seems to me that the problem you guys get from zone alarm ist actually from zone alarm but from your computer's background resources that are running and do not need. I have zone alarm and norton anti virus and wave device as the only 3 applications at startup. I did a trace with BootVis and it did recorded a boot time of 13 seconds. Ive never had a problem. If you want to learn how to shut down background services on Windows XP (no..its not msconfig)......go to www.blkviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm and learn hot to control your computers background services through "services.msc". In that website you will also get a full explanation of what every single service does and recommendations (based on your specs) which you should have running and which you dont need.
