Comment: I am having problems with Zone Alarm. I purchased the new Zone Alarm off the web, and installed it. But it wouldn't run. Every time I tried to start it, it said VSInit.dll was missing. Since it wouldn't run, I couldn't uninstall it gracefully, so I deleted the directory it was stored in. I placed 2 help calls to the ZA folks and never got my promised emails, even after a couple of weeks. So I called back and asked for a refund. They agreed, so I went to CompUSA and a free (after rebate) Zone Alarm Suite. Now it won't install because "Setup is unable to log into the True Vector Service....and cannot continue." Then it says to shut True Vector down and reinstall ZA. But the TV service is not shown in the Services manager area, nor in the Task Manager processes area. Now what?

Reply: (edit)Zone Alarm has a forum (use Google). I gave up on ZA Pro about a year ago- too many little problems. Like you, I never got help from their support, they just kept telling me there was a new version coming out soon.

Reply: (edit)If you had Norton or McAfee installed before ZA and you didn't remove ALL of the traces of them, your ZA won't work. Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Reply: (edit)I used to have Norton, but it was uninstalled. However, after reading your post, I deleted all of the files and now I am getting an additional, different error when I try to install ZA. The new error says "Could not load the DLL library...vsutil.dll (VSSetProtection). The specified procedure could not be found.:

Reply: (edit)sounds like you still have some Norton files imbedded somewhere. If you can't get ZA to install, you may want to give Comodo a shot. It's free and has gotten some really good ratings in the past while. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.... I wouldn't use their AV though, I use Avast FREE and it is a proven winner. Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Reply: (edit)Not sure if this will be of any help but I had a very similar situation as yours. I recently deleted McAfee because of their new "all in one" bloated security/anti-virus/firewall package. It left so many tidbits of registry entries, I had to run their un-installer.....and my registry still had McAfee files in it. Unknown if that pertains to your situation, but thought I'd mention it just in case.. Also.... Every time I tried to install the newest version of (the free) Zone Alarm, it would blue-screen with errors for that "true vector service". I tried everything I could to troubleshoot it... I finally ended up installing an older version of Zone Alarm (version 5.5.094.000) and it installed fine and is running trouble free for three months now. I did zip over to the Shield's Up website to run the test on my firewall; it came back "passed", and all the ports are buttoned up fine. If by chance you deleted McAfee or Norton, try running their un-installers; just maybe that could help a bit. might also want to use your Windows XP search and see if any McAfee or Norton files are lingering in your registry. I also wonder if you have some remnant Zone Alarm files that are conflicting with trying to reinstall Zone Alarm... Might want to try getting rid of all Zone Alarm files, then try another fresh reinstall of Zone Alarm. I remember reading somewhere that if older Zone Alarm files are still in a registry, it could botch up a reinstallation of Zone Alarm due to those old files lingering in the registry. hope this might be of some help for you; I'm not really too computer literate so I know the forum regulars will chime in if I didn't quite word this correctly... hope I helped! Good luck, clammer

Reply: (edit)I ran into this problem and I couldn't uninstall either ZA or McAfee because of the vsutil.dll error. I finally got around this by booting in safemode and uninstalling ZA. I was then able to boot up normally and uninstall McAfee. I gave up on ZA an purchased the full McAfee package that includes the firewall. I wish I had known that the configuration that I had would have worked if I'd have installed ZA first and then McAfee second. Live and learn. MP
