Comment: Hey, i have question i need answered by someone with advanced Zone alarm knowledge. I have zone alarm 3 pro. Whenever i run it, I have problems opening up Kazaa. Even though i have allowed kazaa to run previously, it still wont allow it. I checked off "allow" in the program list as well and yet it refuses to open up. I have to shut of my ZA, open kazaa, then reopen ZA. Thats the only way! Does someone know what to do, or what im doing wrong? Also, ZA seems to boot me off my ISP after no more than 10 minutes online (the message is ususaly "the connection has been reset by the remote host". Can someone help me?

Reply: (edit)Your first mistake was to even THINK about using ZA. Your second was by INSTALLING it. Get rid of it and make sure it is completeley out of your registry, which takes about an hour or so. Then install something like tiny firewall or something OTHER THEN Zone Alarm. Thank you and good night.

Reply: (edit)The only way you can use KAZAA w/ ZA3 is to shut down ZA3, because it blocks EVERYTHING!!!! unless you specify in the properties to allow ALL. I would STRONGLY suggested getting rid of Zone Alarm and go with another firewall. I prefer a ROUTER. It is built in.

Reply: (edit)Sorry again,italic...but get rid of ZA and install Sygate.Make sure you follow the removal instructions at the ZA site. The link to it is in a recent post,I just don't feel like lookin' for it.That is another reason not to use ZA...it's a pain in the ass to uninstall completely. But,make sure you do before installing another firewall. If you decide to go with Sygate,e-mail me or post back here, and I'll give you a great site for using/understanding it. :)

Reply: (edit)I wouldn't even have a second thought about switching to Sygate!I did it and I haven't regretted it yet.I'm real nit-picky about firewalls or any security program.I have no complaints whatsoever about Sygate. The back-trace feature is cool too!Regards.JB

Reply: (edit)This is a example of what I have been saying about my program Call Wave - Answering phone for using computer on 1 telephone line, Zone alarm had to be a med security inorder for me to take my calls and I did not like that, with Sygate you can have high security stealth mode yet allow call wave, I could never go get a security scan with zone alarm and get a stealth mode with it to med. You will love Sygate.....do the uninstall thru programs zone alarm's uninstall not windows control panel...and do go to za web site and get the uninstall instructions and print them out to look at....

Reply: (edit)Maybe I am in the minority, but I use ZAP and have never had any problem with it. I do not use Kazaa or any p2p programs. I have read that many people have problems, but I haven't. I use it with XP Home also which seems to be a problem for some people. I used it with CallWave too without problem. So maybe I am weird, but that's my experience. And my ports are all stealthed according to the tests.

Reply: (edit)For those who want to switch to Norton Security, don't forget the flaw in Norton Internet Security 2003 is known to delete incoming e-mail messages in Outlook Express. At least, until you put the "month late" patch on. NAV, I have never had any problems with it and have used several different versions and I have not been infected by a virus or trojan or worm, but I also use SWAT IT and COMMON SENSE when surfing on the web. And that's in many years time. And, Zone Alarm Pro to me can't be beat. Again, I have not had ANY problems with being hacked, either way, I'm loyal to it because it does as advertised, for me at least. My box is in one piece, I believe due to my efforts and choosing good products to use. Granted, the pure technical sense of the programs are sophisticated, BUT with people using P2P and file sharing and opening attachments and wanting FREE laughing greeting cards, I can believe there will be problems.

Reply: (edit)Zonealarm was the big thing, free, linked to from everywhere on the net, the pro version etc etc. I stopped using it when XP was released because i couldnt get it to run right. I had nortons personal firewall also. Now there are other options. I tried tiny & finally sygate and so far sygate seems to run quietly and not cuase problems. I use it on all the MS OS's from me to xp pro without issue. In 6 months something will replace it and everyone will be telling you to dump sygate unless they continue to offer the best product, for free? If your serious about security you will find yourself changing software frequently as nothing stays #1 for very long.

Reply: (edit)you guys weren't kidding when you said deleting ZA was not easy...but with due diligence i perservered...I have sygate on my computer for some time just waiting to be used, and after reading what you all have to say, i figured what the heck, give it a try..and besides if I want to go back to ZA, I have the disc, and I can just reload..but so far sygate has been working quite well, finding things ZA did not..and the who is feature seems pretty cool..

Reply: (edit)ZA Pro is probably better than the free Zone alarm My problem was with the free one, but I have read many problem with the pro, but the free zone alarm does not hold a candle to the free sygate. Good luck all what ever you use

Reply: (edit)(by the way, thanks everyone for the feedback. I appreciate it) So i have to manually uninstall ZA? If i open up my windows explorer will i find all the components to delete? or do i have to run the "find" scan and look for individual files that way? Also, you know what i noticed about ZA too, it constantly disables my live update for NAV. And it recommended i disable my auto mail scan, so not to work against its own mail scan. Im curious, why cant i just get sygate while i have Za just to test it out...Will the remnents of ZA files work against sygate or something?

Reply: (edit)If you are going to properly UNINSTALL Zone Alarm then you HAVE to go to www.zonelabs.com and seek out their instructions and follow them to the letter. If so, then you will not have any problems UNINSTALLING. Here are SOME of the more important issues (especially TRUE VECTOR SERVICE) when UNINSTALLING ZONE ALARM: Be very certain to UNCHECK START ZONE ALARM ON BOOT (if it has been checked), then power down and then boot up and then proceed with the UNINSTALL. Make sure you select in Windows SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS and also make certain to EMPTY your RECYCLE BIN after DELETING any Zone Alarm files, as part of the UNINSTALL. And if you employ 2 competing firewalls, you can have conflicts with rule sets and permissions, as such that you should even DISABLE Windows XP native firewall if you are using a 3rd party product. As for your LIVE UPDATE problems, it may be a permission issue. And, I would suggest trying ZONE ALARM PRO before you give up on their product, as I think ZA FREE is not quite it's equal.
