Besides trying not to visit questionable websites, give me the security setup that you think would be the best.It can be from experience or from reviews you have read.Free or paid setups.Doesn't matter. It will help someone.
Here is mine.First of all, a firewalled router.Preferably wired over wireless.F-secure or KAV antivirus or suite.Kerio Personal Firewall 4.Webroot or Spyware Doctor. And we'll throw in A2quared.How's that.
Feel free to add or critique.Haven't tried some of these new spyware detection programs yet though!.Have you?.

My take off my head :-)

1. NEVER click on links blindly without first right-clicking for HTTP properties.

2. NEVER download and open attachments unless you know who sends it. BTW yesterday MS send me advisory about a new MyWife family of viruses that is as vulnerable as WMF.

In the same vain, they used to say the same thing about Firefox. No security loopholes. But once it started to become popular, the hackers went at it.Same as Linux. The vast majority of computers use Windows. If Linux really takes off and rivals Windows, then i'm sure they will turn thier intentions on it.And i'm no expert, but i bet they will find something!.

Re response #1 para 2.

I'd go further and say don't even open an attachment if you DO know the sender (they might be infected and unknowingly sending it).

I would say, don't open an attachment even from a known sender unless it is quite clear that the attachment was intended. I'd still be careful then...

As an addition, ensure your system is set to show all file extensions, then learn what they mean - or let OE block all potential nasty ones and put up with the inconvenience.

Very True Derek, and here is why,

Websense® Security Labs (TM) has received several reports that the Blackworm (a.k.a. Nyxem.e, blackmal.e, Kama Sutra) is spreading rapidly and is set to trigger destructive actions, which will delete files with one of 11 different file extensions on the machine on the third of the month (starting February 3). Within the file extensions are .doc, .xls, and .ppt. The worm, which propagates through email with an attachment with a .PIF extension, also spreads through network shares upon infection.

The worm also includes a counter, which sends infected information to a web server. At the time of this alert, the number of infections was more than 680,000 and is climbing rapidly.

Screenshot from website, which is tracking infections:

Yep I knew about that one and it might well be along the lines of the old trick. Something like picture.jpg.pif where "picture.jpg" is really the file name. If you don't see the extensions (.pif in this case) it looks lke picture.jpg which many would just open.

Another golden rule. If you see what looks like a double extension - bin it fast.

Err...sorry for digressing from the thrust of this post. I'll lay off now.

I've got a question that is very relevant to this topic. Seriously how many of us are gullible & curious, really? Seek the truth and ya shall be led to this 5-years-old gospel that most of us don't bother read.

... said I'd lay off LOL. Yep, if an email looks like it's busting to get you to open the attachment or go to a link, there is every chance it's a nasty.

There's only one advantage of being on a spammers list, you learn every trick these types try and soon become "computer streetwise".

Do not believe when somebody tells you that the best protection software is free software. I see some responses where only free products are mentioned. Free is not the best solution.
