Specs: Windows XP
Got an nasty virus on my new aspire one cruising the net the other night ....basically any .exe you tried to run it threw an error message saying it was corrupt- infected and immediately closed it. So you couldnt launch anything to try to fix things ..then it said you could have it "fixed" by purchasing some antivirus program they would hook you up with. Additionally the internet browser would NOT launch either giving a "404" type error message each and every time you tried to launch internet explorer...additionally down in the system tray a ton of program instances showed up and when you hovered over them to see what they were they mysteriously closed - disappeared ????? So the machine was pretty much dead in the water. TO FIX IT I went to restart computer on the task bar hit F8 while booting to get xp into safe mode , I then launched the msdos prompt and ran %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe or recovery console and restored -rolled the computer back about a month back. This fixed everything. Now I was up and running 100% pretty much but to be sure I then went to malwarebytes and ran a scan - clean and all is well. This was a really nasty virus as it pretty much crippled you and XP with nowhere to turn....F8 is your friend with XP during recovery .

Please boot inside the safe mode with the n/w

Make sure that you have chosen the show hidden files and folders and also you have chosen show protected operating system files in the folder options.

Go inside this location

C:\Docs and settings\<user profile>
C:\Docs and settings\<user profile>\Application Data\
C:\Docs and settings\<user profile>\Application Data\Local Settings

you will see a file with a junk name in these locations.

Please post the name of the file here.
