XP will not start!

I have a mates laptop which will not get past the logon screen after typing in the password even in safe mode, he did mention that he may have a virus. I have re-installed xp using the Repair method and it got a little further allowing me to see the wallpaper then stopped, I left it on for 12hrs and still didn't do anything. I am trying to fix this with out loosing his data so any information would be great full! I am even thinking of connecting his hard drive to one of my computers and scanning it with Mc Afee and removing the virus if at all possible. But this would be my 2nd last resort, the last would be to format and do a clean install!
