Subject: XP system restore after Yaha K viruOS: XP homeCPU/Ram: unsure |
Comment: I have a friend whose machine was infected last week by the yaha k virus, She Restored the system. Since then she is having problems with programs developing errors and while trying to reach websites (request times out or has login problems) anyway I was trying to find if the virus could have damaged something that couldnt be restored. I dont know much about viruses, I stopped opening attachments and subscribing to mailing lists that allow them, which is how I got my first and last virus (badtrans)and is most likely how she got her machine infected. I forgot to mention above that IE 6 and Incredimail (I think is run with the help of OE) are the programs that she is having a hard time with. Any input would be great she is frustrated and so am I because i cant figure out whats up. Her computer manufacturer, ISP and downloading updates and security patches for xp and IE 6 havent been very helpful. TIA, Jen

Reply: (edit)If she got I Worm Yaha K, one of its first actions would have placed it the "System Restore" files, and to remove it she would have had to disable "System Restore" as antivirus programs cannot access "System Restore" files. The virus also attacks and disables many antivirus programs. Get the removal tool from the Symantec Website and use it to clean the system. Take care and all the best!

Reply: (edit)It scans clean now, Will running the removal harm the computer if it isnt there anymore? Just as a precaution.
