I have disabled ALL (100% sure on this) firewalls on the computer. I want to run Kazaa (or something like it, a P2P program). I have DSL, just got it a month ago. I have to change some advanced settings, can't remember which, but when i hit the "advanced" tab on the properties listing for the local area connection I get this error:

"Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) information might be corrupted. To correct this, use System Restore to restore Windows to an earlier time (called a restore point). System Restore is located in the System Tools folder in Accessories."

System Restore is not an option, plus I tried earlier and it did not work. Any way I can fix this?

Hopefully you have not disabled your firewalls, or you will be infected by a worm/trojan in just a few minutes. If you have a hardware firewall you need to open the incoming port or outgoing port required by whatever p2p program you have selected. A software firewall will just request you to grant permission. Just remember Kazaa is full of spyware and be sure to scan every download for a worm/trojan/virus that is only available for Kazaa users. The XP firewall only blocks incoming traffic.

I agree with what capt wrote in regard to kazaa. Read this article to find out why you should thwart P2P security risks.

Thanks for the advice about spyware but after a nasty battle with the cool web virus in my old 98 I became excessively paranoid about that stuff so I think I have adequate protection

In anycase, AFTER I figure out what my nonKazaa P2P client needs as a port, how do I open that port on my end?

PS Thanks for the replies, everyone.

It should ask you to open the port either during its installation or later under options.
