Try Safe mode using this method.

Reinstall WindowsXP and keep all your current installed applications and settings:
Put your XP cd in the drive.
If " D " is your CD rom drive.
D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste that command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 ( about 500mb ) on your hard drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.

The next step is to try from boot, the bios must be set to boot from cd 1st & use the 2nd Repair option.

Get back to us if you are unsure.

Keep in mind, you are playing with fire, anything can happen, if you hav'nt been backing up your stuff, take the drive out.

Slave your HD to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy your stuff onto the other HD or other media.
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.

I had this happen twice on me.

Put in the repair cd, the first time 6 months ago and it did the repair on pressing the "R".

However, this time it did not work 6 months later, so I still put in the XP CD, pressed "R" for recovery console, let it come up to a DOS prompt and type: chkdsk.

I am learning the partitioning markings on the drive, I am an entry level tech do from time to time get messed up, magnetic, I usually don't get this on my personal system as I reformat and ghost about 1-2 times a year.

However, business systems, such as mine, we can't do that, so files get lost and the chkdsk moves that portion of the files needed to boot/operate, etc. off the bad/error portions of the drive to another area and on restart, boom it works.

Be patient as sometimes it takes the XP CD a little bit of time to bring up the dos prompt or "repair console". It is slow.

Also some viruses cause continued reboot, so when u do come up do the maintenance, also run the virus scan in safe mode and turn system restore off while running and bring system restore folder sized bar down as anything hiding in there gets deleted with this, sort of empties out system restore bugs.

Once clean go back into windows in regular mode run another scan and if clean, turn system restore back on and increase the bar making the system restore size bigger.

Hope this helps.
