I know that there are security risks in using FTP, in that your password is send unencrypted.
What the risk to connecting one XP computer to another XP or 2000 computer through Windows file sharing? When passwords and user IDs are sent over the Internet, are they encrpyted? I'd like to have my office computer in my Window's network neighborhood.

This is not a good idea, windows filesharing uses the SMB protocol wich is not secure. you could setup a VNP between the PC's. a linux firewall (www.smoothwall.org) at each end would encrypt the SMB traffic before it crosses the internet and decrypts it at the other end.
