XP does not start up in Normal Mode

November 9, 2010 at 04:19:16
Specs: Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3
When I turn it on it gets as far as the user select screen. Sometimes it freezes there but other times it allows me to select a user and then freezes, still on the same user select screen. Can start in safe mode and did so, found a few viruses which MBAM got rid of however i still can't start up normally. I also can't find my xp cd! I am not computer literate and desperately need help.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual processor 4200+
2.21 GHz
896 MB RAM
I'm not sure whether this is the right category which shows my vast amount of computer skills. Please help.

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode?.. (You'll be able to do this by booting the computer and tapping the "F8" key). If you can get there, try using Malware Bytes. Another option you have (provided you have a blank CD/DVD available, which will also be the easiest for you) is to use the Kaspersky Rescue CD: http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?q...

Then burn that .Iso image to the disc using CDBurnerXP: http://cdburnerxp.se/en/home

After it's been successfully burned, reboot the computer and press "F10", or whichever key takes you to the Boot menu. Once at that menu select your "CD-ROM/DVD Drive" and press "Enter". The disc should then start to load.

I have downloaded kapersky to a disk but im unsure of whether i should use it as the page you have linked says there is a high chance of messing up the system. I still have exactly the same problem as before. Is there anything else i can try?
