XP Box Crash - HELP

Avg Anti-virus and anti-spyware 9.0

Specs: Windows XP
My son was up surfing last night and obviously in places he shouldn't have been. He crashed my Windows XPproSP2 box which is the main box on my network. Not in any way blaming the AVG for not catching it but thought I'd inquire here for some ideas on getting going again.

When the machine boots, everything LOOKS normal but my system tray doesn't fill up with programs as they load however, if I do a ctrl-alt-del, many (if not all) of those programs are showing up as processes running.

When I double click onto any desktop icon, I get the windows "open with" pop-up where it appears the computer doesn't know what program to use to open any given file.

The exe files for example, are there but may have been infected (not sure) the good thing is that other files, jpg, etc; open fine with the windows picture viewer so all is not lost but I AM in pretty bad shape.

I was using AVG free but am open to spending as I need to, to get myself out of this and hoped that some folks in this forum might be able to help or offer pointers.

Thanks very much...

As a follow up, when I tried booting into safe mode, the issues seemed to be the same. Is there a trick or way to get an older registry to boot? TIA
