After much research I know what happened here, and a post related to my inability to access antivirus software webpages drew me to this post:
http://www.computing.net/answers/se...Based on the help provided, I downloaded and ran SDFix (in Safe Mode) as well as Hijack This. I have logs for both. At this point I CAN access antivirus sw sites, but I wanted someone to advise whether or not I'm ready to install AVG and connect to the internet or if there are further steps required. Thanks in advance!

Combofix is a powerful tool so follow the instructions exactly or you could damage your computer.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with Combofix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on This Link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.In your case to run Combofix do the following:
1. Go offline turn off your Trend Micro antivirus, Trend Micro Realtime Scanner, and any other antispyware that you may have.
2. Run Combofix and save its log.
3. Restart the computer to get the antivirus running again but leave the antispyware programs off until we get the computer cleaned.
4. Post the Combofix log.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.
Double-click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running or move the mouse, it will cause your system to hang.)
Please post the log it produces.

i really hope the problem is already solved, but in case it isn't i suggest you try manual removal. here's a guide to remove xp antivirus 2009. hope this helps

Thanks again in advance! j

Here's who behind this BS.
I have received this same virus and BOTH times have traced it to communist/marxist "social justice" or "progressive education" groups.
They attempt to make money, hoping that you'll purchase their "AntiVirus" programs. Don't fall for it. (In one case, it even disabled my ability to run my SpyBot program so I had to download another free program-Malbytes anti-malware program. I took the extra precaution of right-clicking on it and scanning for viruses first.)
Check out AdBusters.com to get an idea of who these people are and why they "jam" you with viruses. Simply put, they see America's "consumerism" as the enemy. To you, cars and computers make your life easier. To these radicals, they're the enemy and the cause of poverty and every other social ill.

Open Notepad and copy/paste everything between the X"s into it and make sure the first word (such as KILLALL, Or File, etc.) is at the very top of the page.

You computer appears to be clean
Navigate to and delete this folder:
C:\SDFix
Empty the recycle bin.
Go to start> run> combofix /u (mote the space after combofix) then press enter> run. This will uninstall combofix so give the uninstaller a minute to run.
Go to start> control panel> add/remove programs and uninstall these programs:
Hijack This
Malwarebytes
Eset
You should keep AFT Cleaner and run it weekly.
Make sure your Trend Micro realtime scanner (it should have started with the antivirus).
You should consider adding "Spywareblaster" to your arsenol of antispyware tools, you can download it from this link Spywareblaster
Just download it,install it, and update it. Its free and runs in the background, so you don't actually run it, and re-writes malicious script before it can install on your computer. Look for updates weekly as there is no auto-update on the free version.
How is the computer operating?

Jabuck - thank you so much for your help. I actually uninstalled Trend Micro(I think I did at least) because I wanted to switch to AVG (the Trend Micro was my old company's Antivirus, and it hadn't been updated since Feb; I have AVG on my other laptop). I just tried installing the paid version of AVG but the installation said there is currently an antivirus software loaded. I went through the Trend Micro uninstall, so I'm not sure what its finding.
Any thoughts on this? I will follow your instructions above tomorrow...
Thanks!

Make sure you save the AVG download to your desktop and do not try to run the install online.
Once it is downloaded go offline, go to start> control panel> uninstall AVG Free (if installed and it looks like it is). then try to install the bought version.

I have followed your instructions above and removed all the spyware tools except ATF Cleaner.
I found no folder for Trend Micro; did find Symantic in the file folders but not in the Add/Remove Programs. I deleted the Symantic folder (emptied recycle bin), tried rerunning the AVG install (from desktop) and it still seems to be finding Antivirus software on my machine.
I can contact AVG tech support but it might take 48 hrs for my license key to come via email. Just wondered if you had any additional thoughts/advice.

I've been working with AVG tech support but its slow going. I keep getting a message upon install saying that I currently have an AV/Security product installed and AVG strongly recommends removing before installation.
Does anyone know how to check to see if I have anything running that would make AVG think I currently have AV software?
There is nothing showing up in my program files or in my file structure that I can identify, and I can't decipher items running as Processes in Task Manager.
Thanks in advance.
