I am no computer genius, now that said. This week I saw two virus and one worm ride in on the forced YahooGroups html or script, depending what they are sending out.
Own/run a couple of YahooGroups chat sites. Owners are allowed to make certain settings including the removal of attachments by group members and also to force the through put mail to be in plain text vs html, which I have always done. BUT, in looking for more revenue Yahoo has been experimenting, and it seems weekly with differing types of insterted advertisement and web bugs to either sell or collect (spy out) information. They are at various times forcing by addition to the plain text, some form of html and also "spyware" as forced attrachemts to the recipients group e-mail. You never know when it is going to come in.
I set my main web browser to plain text (netscape 4.73). I also have MS5.5, Opera 5 and Eudora. Also running ZoneAlarm Pro and Inoculate with Smasher for MS5.5 and also SpyStopper and WebWasher. Yes all running at the same time. Run fine.
Now the deal, when installing Eudora I let it copy over my existing mail from Netscape which is kept in plain text. In the duplicate over process Eudora converted the existing mail into HTML format. That, triggered two virus and one worm that was imbedded in the mail that had come from YahooGroups. Inoculate spotted it immediately and isolated the three. After the Eudroa installation I ran Inoculate again and again found the three e-mails from YahooGroups. Deleted it and all was fine. Scanned again and all cleam.
The point being while Netscape was displaying in plain text, mail settings from YahooGroups was set to plain text, there was still two virus and one worm ridding in on the Yahoo e-mail and it sat dormant till I did the e-mail converstion from Netscape to Eudora.
Perhaps this explains why Yahoo has had so many system crashes in the past. Something worth considering.
