Is there a trojan, virus, etc. that would prevent the download and installation of a MS security patch or would remove it once installed?

The reason I ask is that I have a relative who keeps getting trojans on his computer at work. He works in an office where all the computers are networked. His computer is the only one in his department that does not have any MS patches and continuously is infected with trojans and spyware. All the other computers have bunches of MS patches installed and rarely get any trojans. He printed a list of programs installed and I saw that he does have some spyware on the computer (based on the name of the installed program , because sometimes it's just too obvious).

He has no idea how or why he got all this crap on the computer and he doesn't no why the patches aren't on there. He talked to the new computer tech (who is supposed to be in charge of all computer problems) at the office and the guy didn't even know what a Microsoft security patch was! Unfortunately, the relative doesn't have administrator rights on the computer and therefore, cannot install or run certain anti-spyware programs. There's nothing he can do about the patches. But does anyone have any suggestions on what can be done to get rid of the spyware?

Hi ... Have him run these options >>>
1) Download the following four items...

McAfee Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt281.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM .

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode [F8 key during boot]
Okay once in safe mode do the following : Clear out the Temporary internet files and other temp files. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies ... Now close eveything and be back at your desktop

Now click the start buttom > then the Search/Find option > click Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp , click search afterward choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, (Contents only but not the folder itself.)

This one too if it is there C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Delete the recycling bin ...
5) Using Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using the three
utilities; Trend Sysclean, Stinger and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point

Afterward make sure he using Anti- Virus program , A Firewall program , spyblocker program

Out of curiosity, why is there nothing he can do about the patches? Does he not have rights to install software on the system?

What anti-virus is his company running? If he continually gets Trojans/spyware, then it sounds like his anti-virus isn't working. If he doesn't have Admin privileges, who does? Someone would have had to have set up the computer and put it on the network.

Hey ... He should be able to recieve patches or updates from microsoft update site once his computer is running clean ... If he does have an Anti -Virus program which is it ? And how old is it as well ? Because he need to be really sure that he still is recieving update definitions , I have seen some people with their computers that seem like they are still recieving update definitions but weren't ... A good firewall will help also to protect from Trojans/spyware/malware and so on ... Here a list that I find that works good >>> Anti-Virus >>> AVG Pro

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_avg_single.php

Firewall >> Sygate Pro

http://www.sygate.com/products/sygate-personal-firewall-pro.htm

Now some added protection you could use is spyblocker / stopper

http://www.spyblocker-software.com/spyblocker/newbuypage.shtm

Having these products or similar to them you can't go wrong

um, if its a work computer shouldn't thier techs deal with it ?
I know many agreements prevent anyone other then "authrised personal" doing doing work on company equipment.

If he doesn't have admin rights and is under a oppressive group policy there isn't that much he can do.
