Comment:

I think I have winzoa32 and/or various other trojans. I have tried AdAware, Spybot and Norton to remove them. None of which have been successful. I scanned my machine with Hijack This but I do not know where to go beyond that. Please help.

Could you post a Hijack This log.

Please download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

You have an older version of Java that spyware/malware can exploit. You need to get the newest version of Java installed on the computer once you have cleaned it, it can be downloaded from this link. http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp Once you get the new version installed go to start> control panel> add\remove programs and uninstall the old 1.4 version of java.

After you download these tools but before you run smitrem temporarily disable any of the following anti-spyware realtime protection programs that you may have Temporarily Disable Realtime Protection then turn off Norton's ScriptBlocking:

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:

Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK.

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe mode

Download and install Ewido Security Suite We will need this later in safe mode

Be sure to update Ewido

Download killbox to your desktop from this link Killbox We will need it later in safe mode

Download SmitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

Choose your usual account.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
Reboot back into Windows normal mode.

Do a search for "smitfiles.txt" usually found a C:\smitfiles.txt and post the results of the scan.

Reboot into safe mode

Run Hijack This from safe mode, close all windows except Hijack This, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked":

Your log is clean, good job. Update your java asap.

You should add "Spywareblaster" to your arsenol of antispyware tools, just do a google search for spywareblaster, download it,install it, and update it. Its free and runs in the background, so you don't actually run it, and re-writes malicious script before it can install on your computer. Look for updates weekly as there is no auto-update on the free version.

You have an older version of Java that spyware/malware can exploit. You need to get the newest version of Java installed on the computer, it can be downloaded from this link. http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp Once you get the new version installed go to start> control panel> add\remove programs and uninstall the old 1.4 version of java.

Go to start>control panel>add\remove programs and uninstall any of these programs if found:

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
Click Done
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger's actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply and post a new Hijack This log.

This is really driving me up a wall. I have tried numerous things and nothing seems to work. I still have this nasty little big, almost like that cold you can never get rid of. :(

You are having some success. Reboot into safe mode

Navigate to and delete these folders. I need to know if you found them and were successful in deleting them.

C:\WINDOWS\a?sembly (The "?" is most likely an "s")

C:\WINDOWS\system32\*icrosoft.NET (The ("*" is most likely a "M")

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ICROSO~1.NET (This file begins with "ICROSO" and will most likely have some other character following that)

If the folders will not delete try deleting the files appropriate to the folder then delete the folder as follows.

Delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\*icrosoft.NET\ati2evxx.exe

then delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\*icrosoft.NET. Same for the others.

Thank you very much. I am think all of it has been removed yet my IE has been HiJacked. At least that is what I think it is. My homepage is automaticall loads to something called syssecuritypage.com. I can not change it to anything else. I use Firefox on most occassions however there are a few instances that I use IE and I do not want this to be a problem in the future. How do I remedy this?

Please download

Vundofix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log and a new silentrunners log please.

Thank you again, I THINK everything is working correctly now. I do see a couple of things in my HijackThis log. Should this be deleted?

One other thing that I have noticed. I now have two new icons on my desktop. One is Thumbs.db. The other is a folder called Originals. This files has a few pictures that I took in it and it is listed and hidden and read only. They do not appear as bright as the rest of the files on my desktop.

Run Hijack This and remove the 03 item and your log will be clean.

The 02 items is spybot and will disable it if you remove it.

I have heard of the icons being created but can't remember why. For now put the the recycle bin then delete them in a few days after you have run for a little while.

I see nothing in the logs.

Run this free online scan from Panda

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to the desktop, then copy/paste into the text editor and post it.

There is nothing there to remove. Is there a way I can get you a print screen?

Lets look for the bad registry key this way.

If you are not running version 1.4 of Spybot - Search & Destroy, uninstall it, and download and install the current version from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Run Spybot-S&D.
Select "Search for updates" and then select all available updates.
Click on the drop-down box in the top center to choose a download location nearest to you.
Then click "Download updates". When all updates have downloaded, close Spybot-S&D.
Next, please open Spybot Search & Destroy again.
Click on "Check for problems". When the scan has finished, select any entries listed in red and click "Fix selected problems".
Do NOT fix these two problems if you see them:
Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify
Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
In the right pane, click on Date Modified to sort the files by date.
Find the latest copy of the 2 text files that start with:
Checks.SOME_DATE.txt (ex - Checks.060724-0555.txt)
Fixes.SOME_DATE.txt (ex - Fixes.040615-2034.txt)

Post the contents of those two files.
