I discovered "winservs.exe" in my Win 98 SE startup folder this weekend, and removed it successfully as well. This is not the trojan "winserv.exe", but the annoying sypware "winservs.exe"
Here's how:
Always remember, the task NEEDS to be "killed" before it can be deleted from the Startup folder. You may find 2 tasks going at the same time. The first will be "winservs.exe" and the other one will just say "Winservs." So look closely! To remove: Use CTL-ALT-DEL to open the "Close Program" window. Highlight "winservs" and click "End Task" button. Do the same for "winservs.exe". It may take a couple of attempts since the program sometimes doesn't respond. Finally "Task not responding" is displayed. Click "End Task" button again.
Use CTL-ALT-DEL again to verify any reference to "winservs" is no longer in the task list. If it is, then highlight it then press "Remove".
There is also a log in the \windows\applog folder. It's called "winservs.ldg". Be sure and delete it as well. Any reference to "winservs" can be found easily by doing a "find" on files or folders and typing "winservs". Delete anything you find with this reference.
Finally, I use what is called, 'AD-AWARE' that is a free spyware hunter program. It looks for and finds virtually any spyware that may be lurking in your system. It found "winserv.exe" in the registry along with 208 other spyware processes in my system, and cleaned it right off!! It's a great program, and my computer runs as good as ever!
Here's the URL for AD-AWARE: http://www.lavasoftusa.com . Download it and then use it when you have done the above. Hope this helps. Best of luck

Thanks for these tips! This has helped tremendously - a website that you may want to look into is http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm
It has a great listing of spyware/adware programs and how they are getting onto your machines and what they do. Purity Scan (sear1) is explained there.
