Can someone suggest how I can get rid of winserv.exe? I also have a program called "sear1 MFC application" trying to get past my firewall. Has anyone heard of it before?

Take a look in the Startup Menu of your profile and the All Users profile (if you're on NT/W2K/XP) Not sure where these are on the 9x series.
You can probably find all of them by right clicking on the Start button and selecting Explore All Users (NT/W2K/XP)
You might also have to ckeck the Run key in the registry (or possible a RUN= somewhere in something like win.ini)
Hope this helps some.

You can't get it out of your start-up menu while the computers running normally. Shut down, and restart in Safe-Mode. It will bypass the start menu, and you can remove it from the start menu successfully.

I simply restarted to the MS DOS prompt and dug my way out through several subdirectories until I found the Startup Menu. At that point, I just entered del winservs.exe to blow it away.
To get back to windows, just type exit and press the enter key. Your problems should be gone.
