Subject: Winnet.dll not found
OS: Windows XP Home Edition
CPU/Ram: Intel 2.8 Ghz and 256 MB
Model/Manufacturer: Dell 4700 Dimension
Comment:

When I start my computer and click one of the three login accounts setup on my computer I receive the following error message "This application has failed to start because Winnet.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem." After the message goes away my desktop icons does not appear and I cannot open any programs. The start button nor the system tray icons does not appear either. I receive a blank screen with my desktop wallpaper. Please help!!!!! How can I correct this problem without blowing up my hard drive. I have some very important information that I need and I do not want to lose it. Can anybody out please provide step by step instructions so I can correct this fatal error?

Thanks,

It is a trojan. Try opening task manager by pressing ctrl, alt, delete simutaniously>new task> type "cmd" without the quotes then press enter. A black sceen will appear behind task manager.Close task manager and on the black screen at the cursor type "del C:\WINDOWS\System32\winnet.dll" without the quotes and note the space after "del" then press enter.

Next do the same for C:\WINDOWS\System32\winnet.ini

Do not confuse these with the legit file "wininet.dll".

Restart the computer.

So are you saying this should correct the issue I am facing? If this does not work what is the next step? Thanks for the quick response.

If it will allow you to boot into widows after deleting the .exe and .ini we may need to run a desktop cleanup tool, maybe not, then run some other scans and cleaners.

System restore may be the next step.

Try doing a google search for winnet.dll for more info.
